My friends and I, share a lot of things in common. We live in the same neighborhood, hang out in the same joints and work within the same industry. Wait a minute! Which came first? My friends or the things we share in common? Is it the things we share in common that got us to be friends or the fact that we’re friends made us share certain things in common? I dunno! But then, the statement “show me your friends and I will tell you who you are” comes to mind.

There are certain factors that help us decide how we want to live and where we want to live. In making certain life decisions, it is important that we bear in mind, the fact that our life tends to take an appearance similar to that of the people we are in close proximity with. One is likely to talk like the people one spends most of the day talking to. Although it may not be true all of the time, you are likely to become a realtor if your network is made up of mostly real estate professionals. Feel free to discount likely exceptions.

Elon Musk paid a visit to Richard Branson upon the latter’s return to earth from space. Bill Gates spends a lot of time hanging out with the Oracle of Nebraska, Warren Buffet. Jeff Bezos and Barry Diller are friends too. In fact, Barry predicted that Bezos would one day become the richest person in the world (that’s stale news now innit?). Looks like a trend with these billionaires right? Might be worth emulating.

For instance, when someone is coming into a new country like Canada, the people one associates with upon arrival, or even prior to arrival will determine a lot of things about how the experience will turn out. As a new international student, if you get into the midst of PR holders and citizens who started out as international students, and stay in their fold, you are likely to follow their footsteps and within their exact time frame get your PR or citizenship (whichever applies). However, if you choose other associations, you are likely to have an experience similar to those who you are associating with.

This analogy works perfectly with other choices we make too, like the kind of home to buy, the make of car to buy, etc. If you want a large spacious house with a nice ambiance, calm atmosphere, then you should spend your time in an environment that has such in good numbers.

Two good heads, they say, are better than one. Right? Let’s go make some new friends y’all.
